Ruben Velez, bass guitarist with Caribbean roots.
Ruben’s musical journey started at an early age playing saxophone and bass guitar. His musical style is influenced by Jaco Pastorius, Paul McCartney, and Chris Squire. Early on, Ruben had the good fortune to study with Doug Burris.
At age 17, Ruben and his band the “Love Power” won the WABC Big Break Battle of the Bands at Carnegie Hall, circa 1969.
Ruben and band were then employed by the Naval Exchange playing for our troops at bases including Spain, Iceland, Newfoundland, Cuba and Puerto Rico.
Following this tour Ruben was well known in the New York/New Jersey club circuit. He then settled in St Thomas, performing at the resort circuit in paradise.
Ruben is now performing locally on the sandbar known as Satellite Beach. Harmonies and cohesiveness of Radio Flyers is exceptional. Come out and enjoy our music.
